Big news for the Galapagos. Tortuga Bay Beach, located on Santa Cruz Island, has been ranked among the Best of the Best Beaches in South America for 2026 by Tripadvisor. That recognition is based on thousands of traveler reviews and ratings collected over the past year.

And honestly, if you’ve ever walked that long white shoreline with marine iguanas sunbathing next to you, it’s not hard to understand why.

What Makes Tortuga Bay So Special?

Tortuga Bay isn’t just another pretty beach. It’s one of those places that feels wild, open, and almost untouched.

Here’s what sets it apart:

1. Powdery white sand and turquoise water
The beach stretches for about 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles), offering plenty of space even during busier seasons. The contrast between the bright sand and deep blue Pacific is dramatic and unforgettable.

2. Wildlife everywhere
This is the Galapagos, after all. At Tortuga Bay, you’ll often see:

  • Marine iguanas
  • Blue-footed boobies flying overhead
  • Pelicans diving
  • Occasionally reef sharks and rays in the shallows

It’s common to feel like you’re sharing the beach with the real residents of the islands.

3. Two beaches in one
Tortuga Bay is divided into two main areas:

  • Playa Brava – Open ocean, strong currents, incredible scenery. Swimming here is usually not allowed due to rough surf.
  • Playa Mansa – A calm, protected cove perfect for swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding.

That second section is ideal for families and have relaxed afternoons in the water.

How to Get There

One of the best parts? You don’t need a boat tour. From Puerto Ayora, it’s about a 30 to 40 minute walk along a paved trail through a protected area of the Galapagos National Park. The path itself is part of the experience, surrounded by native vegetation and birdlife. You can also take a water taxi back from Playa Mansa if you prefer not to walk both ways.

Why Tripadvisor’s Recognition Matters

Tripadvisor’s “Best of the Best” award is based on traveler reviews over a 12-month period. Only a small percentage of listings worldwide receive this distinction. For Tortuga Bay to rank among South America’s top beaches is significant. The continent is home to world-famous coastal destinations in Brazil, Colombia, Peru, and beyond. For a remote, protected beach in the Galapagos to stand out among them says a lot about the experience visitors are having.

And what visitors consistently mention in reviews:

  • Cleanliness
  • Natural beauty
  • Wildlife encounters
  • The feeling of space and serenity

Recognized Beyond Tripadvisor

Tortuga Bay’s reputation doesn’t stop with Tripadvisor. Over the years, international travel blogs, nature-focused publications, and global beach roundups have repeatedly highlighted it as one of the most spectacular and unspoiled beaches in the world. It’s often featured in lists celebrating “untouched beaches,” “best wildlife beaches,” or “bucket-list destinations for nature lovers.” What makes Tortuga Bay stand out in these global mentions isn’t luxury infrastructure or beach clubs, it’s the raw, protected beauty, the wildlife encounters, and the feeling that you’re standing somewhere truly wild and rare.

When Is the Best Time to Visit?

Tortuga Bay is beautiful year-round, but conditions vary:

  • December to May: Warmer water, calmer seas, sunnier days.
  • June to November: Cooler water, more wind, dramatic skies, excellent wildlife activity.

Early morning visits are ideal if you want fewer people and softer light for photos.

A Reminder About Conservation

Tortuga Bay is part of the Galapagos National Park. That means:

  • No food or alcohol allowed on the beach
  • No drones
  • No touching wildlife
  • Stay on marked paths

The reason it still looks this pristine is because of strict protection rules. Respecting them ensures it stays award-worthy for years to come.

More Than Just a Beach

What makes Tortuga Bay truly special isn’t just the ranking or the photos. It’s the feeling. You walk barefoot on white sand. You see marine iguanas scattered like prehistoric sculptures. You hear nothing but waves and wind.

It doesn’t feel developed. It doesn’t feel commercial. It feels like the Galapagos should feel. And now, officially, it’s recognized as one of the best beaches in South America. If you’re planning a land-based trip, Tortuga Bay is not optional, it’s a must!
