The Galapagos is home to two main spiny lobster species: the red lobster (Panulirus penicillatus), found in shallow rocky areas, and the green lobster (Panulirus gracilis), which prefers sandy mangrove bays. These clawless lobsters have spiky antennae and two frontal horns. Lobster fishing, which began in the 1960s, is now regulated to prevent overfishing. The season runs from September to December, with size limits and bans on catching egg-bearing females. Lobsters play a key role in the marine ecosystem and are a major part of the local economy. Their sweet, delicate meat is enjoyed grilled, steamed, or in ceviche, especially during the open season. Conservation efforts ensure their sustainability for the future.
