For anyone planning to visit the Galapagos Islands, it’s essential to understand the updated travel requirements, including the Transit Control Card (TCC), also known as TCT in Spanish. This measure helps regulate tourism in the Galapagos, promotes sustainable travel, and streamlines the entry process for all visitors in 2025 and beyond.

Starting May 29, 2025, all tourists and visitors to the Galapagos Islands can obtain their TCC completely online—a major step forward in the digitalization of public services by the Governing Council of the Galapagos Special Regime (CGREG).

This new system allows travelers to fulfill this mandatory requirement easily and securely from anywhere in the world using just a computer or mobile device, eliminating the need for in-person paperwork.

What is TCC and Why is it Important?

The Transit Control Card is required to enter the Galapagos Islands and is part of a broader effort to regulate tourism and protect this unique ecosystem. It helps authorities monitor visitor flow and ensure the sustainability of the islands.

How to Register Online:

  1. Visit: https://siig-cgreg.gobiernogalapagos.gob.ec
  2. Accept the data processing policy.
  3. Watch the required informational videos about rules for visiting the Galapagos.
  4. Fill out your personal details and verify your email.
  5. Submit your travel information and immigration status.
  6. Accept the terms and responsibilities.
  7. Make the payment online with a debit or credit card.
  8. Click “Refresh Page” to enable the download of your TCC.

What to Bring on Travel Day:

Even if you've completed your TCC online, you must visit the CGREG counter at the airport (before your flight to the Galapagos) with:

  • Your TCC (digital or printed)
  • Valid passport or ID
  • Travel vouchers
  • Accommodation booking confirmation
  • Roundtrip air ticket

Launch Day: Mixed Reactions from Travelers

While the system represents a long-awaited upgrade, the launch day has not been without issues. Several tourists at mainland airports have reported long lines, confusion, and delays, especially among travelers unaware that the new online system had replaced the traditional in-person process.

Some travelers were caught off guard by the need to pre-register online, resulting in crowding at the CGREG counters. Others expressed frustration over glitches during the form submission or payment process.

Authorities are expected to fine-tune the system in the coming days, but travelers are advised to complete the online TCC process well in advance and arrive early at the airport to avoid any last-minute setbacks.

A Step Forward to Sustainable Tourism

Despite the rocky start, this new digital process aims to:

·       Improve travel experience

·       Reduce airport wait times

·       Strengthening visitor management and conservation efforts

It aligns with the Galapagos mission to maintain responsible tourism and preserve its biodiversity for future generations. Are you planning your trip soon? Don’t risk delays, complete your TCC online ahead of time and help protect the Galapagos.
